This baby kangaroo is named Hope. For good reason...

Found alone without her mommy, burned and collapsed, little ‘Hope’ was rushed to our triage centre during the devastating 2020 Australian bushfires.

We had been living and working out of a campground that was serving as a triage centre to give veterinary aid to animals that had been injured in the 2020 Australian bushfires.  The Australian army had kindly deployed some troops to help out and the US embassy in Australia came to pay a visit to see what we were up to.

When they were there, this little ‘joey’ was rushed through the door in the arms of a rescuer.  She was found collapsed near a road, burned and alone.  Her mother probably perished in the fires but she managed to make it near to a road for help to find her.

The folks at the embassy were touched to have been witness to such a moment and strong spirit.  They named her Hope.  Truly living up to her name, she bucked the odds and made a recovery.  When her burns were healed, she was bigger and the grasslands returned, Hope would go back to the wild.

This is what Hope looks like.  If given the chance, Nature can recover, even thrive.  In this case ‘chance’ for this orphaned kangaroo meant hydration, nutrition, warmth and care for her burns after a major bushfire.

Climate change is the biggest problem humanity has ever faced – will we do enough, and in time?  The exciting thing is that there ARE solutions, in fact we know well enough to get started already.  What’s the biggest hurdle?  Simple but not easy.  First and foremost, choosing leaders both societal, industrial and political, who are up to the task of getting our planet back on the right path.

Thanks to the teams of IFAW , Vets for Compassion and Animals Australia for stepping up in the moments of greatest need. Proud to be part of the team.
